Tournament Division Chairmans Report – June 2022
The first competition for 2022 was scheduled to place at Vineyard Lake on the 2nd of January 2022. Some big names from Europe had entered and the starting list quickly grew to 30 plus skiers. Then the 4th wave of Covid hit, Omicron was here, international flights cancelled and so we had to postpone the Vineyard competition to the 5th of February 2022. Unfortunately, this meant the Europeans could no longer enter due to work commitments and travel uncertainty.
On the weekend of 5 February, the Vineyard Lake competition went ahead. It was a rankings list competition with 21 full coarse, 7 half coarse and 7 crossover coarse skiers on the start list.
The next competition of the season was the Ski Nautique Classic hosted and organised by Don Shead at his Ski World venue in Benoni. This took place on 30 April 2022. It was a normal homologation competition with 8 slalom and 3 trickers on the start list.
The final competitions of the 2022 season were recently held at Vineyard Lake on the weekend of 13 May 2022. The Suzuki South African Champs were held on the Saturday and Suzuki All Africa Champs were held on the Sunday. Both competitions were 2 rounds of rankings list slalom and 1 round of normal homologation tricks. The start list comprised a total of 21 skiers – 14 South Africans and 7 Namibians. Financial contributions were made by AFCON and Atlantic Suzuki.
On the international front we have a 4-person team representing SA in the +35 European and Africa Championships to be held in Ioannina Greece on 21 – 24 July 2022. The team consists of Robbie Alexander, Andrew Bowes, Samantha Bloemsma and captain Jan Johnson.
Travis Fisher will be the only South African skiing in the World Games in Alabama on 13 to 16 July 2022. This is an invitational event held every 4 years.
Yours in skiing…
